Maintaining adequate thermoregulation in newborns is essential for reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings (WHO, 2024). Early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) between mother and newborn is a simple yet effective strategy for regulating infant body temperature, reducing hypothermia, and stabilizing vital signs (UNICEF, 2024).
SSC is a core component of KMC and is recommended by global health organizations as an alternative to incubator-based thermal regulation in low-income countries (Adebayo et al., 2024). However, its implementation in Nigerian hospitals, including those in Taraba State, is often inconsistent due to cultural beliefs, lack of training among healthcare providers, and infrastructural limitations (Oladele et al., 2024).
This study examines the impact of SSC on newborn thermoregulation in Taraba State hospitals, assessing its effectiveness and exploring barriers to its widespread adoption.
